Meet the Faces of REVOLUTION: Episode 3 IDENER Research & Development

IDENER Research & Development is the IDENER division focused on the group’s R&D activities. Specifically, IDENER R&D investigates the multidisciplinary field of Computational Science and its application of systems and processes in key areas: Industrial Technologies, ICTs, Biotechnology, Energy, Resource and Raw Materials Efficiency.

Within the Revolution project, IDENER R&D will be responsible for developing a predictive process model and an AI Advanced Control System in close cooperation with Farplas. Idener will also lead Life Cycle Assessment and societal-impact analysis.

Mr Jaime Durán is the WP leader for the AI-Control activities. With his education in Electronics, Robotics and Mechatronics engineering, and Automatic engineering, he has extensive knowledge to answer our questions. Do you want to meet Jaime?

Good morning, Jaime. We are delighted to have the opportunity to talk with you. We start with a personal question. How is REVOLUTION enriching your professional career?

“Thanks, Andrea, for this interview. Answering your question, one of the things that I love most about EU research projects, and specifically thanks to the inherent Project Revolution’s multidisciplinary nature, is that I am continuously learning new technologies hand by hand with top European experts and manufacturers. This allows me to identify, design, develop and deploy new algorithms and systems based on my expertise field, computational maths (control and optimisation, machine learning, data analysis, etc.), in real-world applications and industries. To such an end, I have not only to gather and implement all my knowledge and skills previously learned but also go deeper and study the latest advancements in order to achieve a successful solution.”

From IDENER development point of view, which could be the improvement from REVOLUTION?

“As stated in the description of my company, IDENER R&D is focused on the application of Computational Science in different fields, such as Industrial Technologies, ICTs, Biotechnology, Energy, Resource and Raw Materials Efficiency, etc. Nevertheless, IDENER has never participated in a project where an Advanced Process Control algorithm based on an ML model must be applied in the automotive industry. Accordingly, Revolution Project will help us to enhance our expertise in the application of Computational Maths in a new field and, thus, open a new gate for future projects and collaborations.”

“…I have not only to gather and implement all my knowledge and skills previously learned but also go deeper and study the latest advancements in order to achieve a successful solution.”

Discussing policies, what do you think about the legal framework?

“Due to humans’ impact on climate change, the European Commission is creating and promoting a normative framework and roadmaps (e.g. European Green Deal, 2030 Climate Target Plan, European Climate Pact…) where all the parts of society and economic sectors (from the power sector to industry, mobility, buildings, agriculture, forestry…) will play their part in the fight against the climate change.

In such a context, Revolution Projects aims to play an important role in this fight, since it focuses on overcoming the challenges hindering the use of recycled materials. Specifically, the project looks for the widespread adoption of circular economy principles in the Automotive industry, which represents 8.5 % of EU employment in manufacturing.

Thus, from my point of view, Revolution is highly aligned with EC’s guidelines and regulations, and it will have a great level of acceptance from policymakers in EU.”
